Overview

Uit je Waterbubbel (Out of Your Water Bubble) is an interactive Augmented Reality (AR) walking tour that brings Dutch water management to life. Through playful storytelling, spatial interaction, and gamified exploration, this mobile-first experience invites users to step outside their “bubble” and engage with the systems that shape the Dutch landscape. Built to be accessible from any mobile browser, the platform transforms public spaces into immersive educational environments that are equal parts fun and informative.

Challenge

Although water management is vital to life in the Netherlands, it often remains invisible and taken for granted. The challenge was to create an experience that would reconnect people with this crucial infrastructure in a way that felt engaging and effortless. It had to be something users could access instantly, without needing to download an app, while still offering enough richness and interactivity to captivate attention across a broad audience.

Approach

The experience begins with Otto the Otter, a lively AR character who guides users through a curated walking route in the Amstelland region. As they move along the path, users encounter interactive checkpoints that reveal facts about water systems, river networks, and climate challenges. Each stop is brought to life through augmented visuals, lighthearted mini-games, and motion-based interactions that turn learning into play. Participants might shake their phones to clean virtual bubbles, match flowers to discover local flora, or take AR-enhanced selfies surrounded by digital water effects—all while deepening their understanding of how the Dutch water system works. The journey is seamlessly tied to the physical world through GPS, ensuring that each digital moment is grounded in a real place with a real story.

The Experience

We designed Uit Je Waterbubbel as a browser-based application to remove barriers and maximise accessibility. From the first moment of contact, users can dive straight into the experience without downloads or installations. The interface is crafted for mobile-first interaction, making it intuitive for users to explore both digitally and physically. Built with a modular architecture, the experience supports future expansion—new locations, stories, and games can be added without changing the platform’s core structure. With thoughtful design, engaging animations, and responsive technology, the experience feels fluid, responsive, and entirely immersive.

Result

Uit je Waterbubbel turns passive awareness into active engagement. It makes complex systems tangible, brings local stories to life, and fosters a sense of personal connection to water and climate resilience. By linking digital content to physical space, the project encourages exploration, learning, and environmental consciousness. For users of all ages, it offers a refreshing way to engage with serious topics—by stepping outside, interacting, and seeing their surroundings through a new lens. This case captures how education, storytelling, and spatial technology can come together to spark curiosity and action in the real world.
