Michel, Team Lead Sales & Projects at The Brink, explains why strong brand experiences begin by looking beyond the initial brief.

A logo may be the most recognisable part of a brand, but it is rarely the only thing people remember. They remember how a company made them feel. That feeling develops through every interaction: a conversation with someone from the team, a visit to the website, an event, a social post or a digital experience. Each moment contributes to the impression someone forms of the organisation. Together, those moments become the brand.

Looking beyond the brief

Companies often approach an agency with a clear request. They may need a new website, campaign, event or experience, and the expected solution has usually already been discussed internally. But the initial brief is not always the real question. A company naturally sees a challenge through its own structures, priorities and established ways of working. An outside perspective creates the distance needed to ask what is really behind the request and whether the proposed solution is the right one.

This does not mean disregarding the brief. It means understanding the wider context before deciding what should be created. As Michel explains, clients do not need an agency simply to repeat their own ideas. They need a partner that listens, understands their organisation and is prepared to challenge familiar assumptions when doing so can lead to a stronger result. Before asking what should be made, it is often more valuable to ask what needs to change.

That wider perspective becomes especially important when thinking about the brand as a complete experience. As Michel puts it, every touchpoint where someone interacts with a company should create the same feeling. This does not mean every interaction needs to look identical. A website, a meeting, an exhibition stand and a social media post all serve different purposes, but they should still feel as though they belong to the same organisation.

Creating a consistent feeling

Consistency is not about repetition. It is about recognition. The language, design, behaviour and level of attention should all communicate the same underlying character. A company that positions itself as innovative cannot depend entirely on predictable experiences. A brand that wants to feel open and human should not communicate in a way that feels distant or unnecessarily complicated. What an organisation says about itself and what people actually experience need to reinforce one another.

Sometimes that requires breaking the mould a little. People do not always want another standardised solution they have already seen. They want something that helps them connect with an idea in a more meaningful way. This is where immersive thinking can play an important role. Immersion does not necessarily mean virtual reality or complex technology. It can simply mean giving people an active role by inviting them to explore, participate, respond or see a familiar subject from a different perspective.

For organisations that want to be seen as innovative, this is particularly important. Innovation cannot exist only in a presentation, mission statement or sales pitch. It needs to become tangible in the way people encounter the company. The technology or format should never be the objective on its own. Its value comes from helping the audience understand, feel or experience something more clearly.

Different perspectives, stronger ideas

Creating those experiences requires different perspectives to come together. Strategy helps reveal the real challenge, creativity transforms that challenge into an idea, and design and technology shape how the idea is experienced. The client brings a deep understanding of the organisation, its audience and ambitions, while the agency contributes distance, new references and experience from other contexts. Neither perspective is complete on its own. The strongest work develops through the exchange between them.

Every project may have an immediate goal, but it should also contribute to a larger direction. A website is not only a website, and an event is not an isolated moment. Each touchpoint becomes part of the relationship between an organisation and its audience. Not every interaction needs to communicate the complete brand story, but each one should feel like a credible part of it.

That is the opportunity behind the brief: not only to create the requested asset, but to understand the organisation behind it, challenge familiar perspectives and build an experience that supports where the brand wants to go. Because a brand is not simply what a company says about itself. It is what people experience, one touchpoint at a time.
